Tips and Tricks

Here is a list of Tips and Tricks i have learned the last several years while shooting video, you can learn from my mistakes and hopefully not have to make them yourself. I will update this page every month or so.

Gear List:

  1. Microfiber Lens cleaning cloth
  2. Siemens Star - Laminated (DIY)
  3. Warn Cards - Laminated (DIY)
  4. Firewire IEE1394 Cable 6 - 4 pin & 6 - 4 pin adapter (4 - 4 pin cable if i am using a windows computer with 4 pin on both laptop and DVX, the HD110 has a 6 pin on the camera)
  5. Extra Batteries AA for wireless audio
  6. Leatherman Multi Tool
  7. Extra Tapes
  8. XLR cable

General Practices:

  1. Record 30 seconds of Bars / tone and 30 seconds of Black on tapes before using them.
  2. After using tape slide the tape lock to the locked position, Label and place in case for later import.
  3. Mark your gear, I have bright orange Gaffer tape with my name on it and some have white labels with my phone.

Tips for shooting from a moving car:

  1. For larger shoulder cameras such as the GY-HD110u i found that sitting in the back seat gave more room to operate the camera and i was able to spread out and hold the camera more steady, Shooting though the windshield you can brace yourself against the sides of the front seats making it a smoother shoot.
  2. With small hand held cameras you can shoot from booth front and rear seats.

JVC GY-HD110u:

  1. If the image is not sharp both at full wide and full telephoto your back focus is set incorrectly.
  2. When plugging in and unplugging the IEE1394 cable make sure the power is OFF to the camera!!! I have a 6 - 4 pin adapter that i use with a 6 - 4 pin cable to prevent power going over the cable.
  3. The battery supplied by JVC will only last about 40 - 60 minutes on a full charge and takes about 3 - 4 hours to charge, I highly recommend a Anton Bauer or IDX Battery Kit.
  4. When using the IDX Battery Kit the camera will auto off at 12V, When using the JVC supplied battery the camera will auto off at 6V.
